Bronchial Atresia

  • Bronchial atresia
  • developmental anomaly
    • focal obliteration of the proximal segment of a bronchus
    • with hyperinflation of the distal lung.
  • Clinical
    • usually asymptomatic
    • may cause
      • shortness of breath,
      • cough,.

Pathology

  • Anatomically more like a focal stenosis or atresia of
  • segmental or subsegmental airway
    • most commonly apico-posterior segment of the left upper lobe
    • distal airways and lung are normally formed
    • distal airways
      • filled with mucus
    • distal lung

CXR

  •  focal ovoid or tubular opacity (finger-in-glove)
  • radiating from the hilum associated with a
  • distal area of hyperlucent lung.
  • CT
    atretic bronchial stump

    • plugged with mucus
    • finger-in-glove appearance
    • distal hyperinflation
