- Bronchial atresia
- developmental anomaly
- focal obliteration of the proximal segment of a bronchus
- with hyperinflation of the distal lung.
- Clinical
- usually asymptomatic
- may cause
- shortness of breath,
- cough,.
Pathology
- Anatomically more like a focal stenosis or atresia of
- segmental or subsegmental airway
- most commonly apico-posterior segment of the left upper lobe
- distal airways and lung are normally formed
- distal airways
- filled with mucus
- distal lung
CXR
- focal ovoid or tubular opacity (finger-in-glove)
- radiating from the hilum associated with a
- distal area of hyperlucent lung.
- CT
atretic bronchial stump- plugged with mucus
- finger-in-glove appearance
- distal hyperinflation
