Hernias in the Chest

Herniating Lipoma into the Chest
CXR of an 80year old male shows splaying of the carina suggesting left atrial enlargement. There is however an unusual soft tissue on the right side of the heart that has a relatively straight superior border starting at the diaphragm and pointing toward the carina.

Herniating Lipoma into the Chest
CT scan at the level of the hiatus of an 80year old male shows fat herniating from the abdominal cavity into the thoracic cavity continuing to the hilum posterior to the left atrium. This may represent a lipoma, less likely a liposarcoma or herniation of retroperitoneal fat without associated herniation of the stomach
